One definition of Positive Psychology:
“The study of what constitutes the pleasant life, the engaged life, and the meningful life.” (Seligman).

As we live our life, we experience both positivity and negativity. Our feelings largely depend upon our wishes, worries, hopes, sadness, joy, anxiety, happiness, regrets, shame, blame, envy, jealousies. So, it’s no surprise that we get tired, exhausted, stressed, angry and experience even worse emotions that we may find difficult to cope with.

Positive Psychology

The field of positive psychology is dedicated to understanding how people work in terms of positivism, what make us feel good, happy and how to live meaningful lives. The focus is heavily on topics like character strengths, optimism, life satisfaction, happiness, wellbeing, gratitude, compassion (and self-compassion), self-esteem and self-confidence, hope and elevation.

Positive psychology is a subfield of psychology founded by Martin Seligman (President of the American Psychological Association 1998). He is known for theory of ‘learned helplessness’ and the connection between the feeling of helplessness and depression. Seligman continued his research, focusing more on positive human experiences, states and traits, as well as wellbeing, happiness, strenght and growth. He called this research “learned optimism”.

Flow

Another aspect of positive psychology is flow, which was first defined and explored by Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi. He noticed that artists often achieved intense focus and great concentration and could lose track of time for several hours. Further investigation found that the same is true for musicians, writers and other creative professions.

More recently I have undertaken courses in work-life pedagogy, coaching, research on happiness and well-being (positive psychology), as now is the time for a new chapter in my life, to help others to overcome anxiety, prevent burnout and to jettison negativity, to achieve the same level of fulfilment and wellbeing within their lives.

Now his research has proven that anybody can get into the ‘flow-channel’ while undertaking a manageable challenge that requires concentration and skill. Flow appears to be linked to greater happiness and well-being.

Can we change ourselves and become happier?

According to Sonja Lyubomirsky, 50 per cent of our happiness is due to genetics, 10 per cent life circumstances and 40 per cent intensions. So that’s very positive, it is possible for everyone change at least 40 per cent! This means everybody can learn how to become more balanced, optimistic, mentally and physically stonger and happier.

JOHALOHA also follows others people working within the field of positive psychology and other areas of human growth, such as Goleman, Dalai Lama, Whitmore, Sinek, Chopra, Trolle, Covey and Pink.

Why learn to achieve more joy and personal growth?

We live in a fast-paced world with lots of things happening simultaneously – also known as VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity). We are bombarded with a huge amount of negative news about wars, the pandemic, environmental threats, political conflicts and natural disasters.

In addition, many of us have hectic and demanding schedules, so it is no surprising if we stressed, anxious or exhausted. That’s why it is so important to find a balance between our tempo (fast and slow) and feelings (negative and positive). We need to learn how to focus on and cherish our well-being and happiness and the meaning in our chaotic daily lives.

Now his research has proven that anybody can get into the ‘flow-channel’ while undertaking a manageable challenge that requires concentration and skill. Flow appears to be linked to greater happiness and well-being.
